PASSION WEEK 2020 DAILY BIBLE READINGS & DEVOTIONALS

Passion Week 2020 Readings image

April 5, 2020 to April 12, 2020

All Day

FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH

PASSION WEEK READINGS

FOR INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES

Passion Week is the most solemn week of the Christian year.  In order to stress the importance of this week, this special devotional guide is being offered as a means of preparing us spiritually for Resurrection Sunday.  These devotions will take us, as a church, step by step through the last week of Christ’s life on earth.  The focus is not necessarily one of educating us on what Jesus did each day of the last week, but rather on our journey and pilgrimage with him.  These readings will be beneficial if done as personal quiet times or as family devotions.

PALM SUNDAY, APRIL 5

Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem calls us into a preview of the whole week.  It has been a Christian custom to read the passion story of Jesus Christ on Palm Sunday.  We see how quickly the mood shifts from “Hosanna!  Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!” to the cry of “Crucify Him!”

Scripture readings:

Mark 11:1-11 (To be read in the morning or afternoon)

Mark 14:32-72; 15:1-47 (To be read in the evening – Since this reading is rather lengthy, a retelling of the events might be preferable for families with small children)

MONDAY, APRIL 6

Today we recall the work of Jesus on the Monday during the last week of his life.  Just as he cleared the Temple, this week is a time for us to rid our lives of the sin that hinders our worship and devotion to Christ.

Scripture readings:

Isaiah 42:1-9

Matthew 21:12-17

TUESDAY, APRIL 7

Tuesday in Jerusalem was a day of controversy as the religious leaders continually asked Jesus questions.  Notice today the wisdom of our Savior as he worked his way through these potential traps.

Scripture readings:

Isaiah 49:1-6

Matthew 22:15-46

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8

Today we will focus on Jesus being anointed at the home of Simon the Leper.  This event actually occurred on Tuesday night during Passion Week.  The Gospels give us no account of events on Wednesday of that week.

Scripture readings:

Isaiah 50:4-9

Mark 14:1-10

MAUNDY THURSDAY, APRIL 9

This is the day of the Last Supper.  Today we will join Jesus with his disciples in the Upper Room.

Scripture readings:

Exodus 12:1-14

John 13:1-15

Matthew 26:26-30

GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 10

On Good Friday we remember the death of Jesus Christ.  This is a day to eat very simply or not at all.  Beginning today and into tomorrow, try to observe times of silence, prayer and meditation.  These disciplines will help us prepare for the festive joy of worship on Sunday.

(Watch the Community Good Friday Service online tonight at 6:00 pm

Scripture readings:

Isaiah 52:13-15; 53:1-12

John 19:1-37

SATURDAY, APRIL 11

On the Saturday of Passion Week, the body of Jesus Christ lay in a tomb.  As we recall this event, try to enter into and imagine the sorrow and loss of Jesus’ family and disciples at this time.  Turn off media devices and TV and spend today in silent reflection as much as possible.

Scripture readings:

John 19:38-42

Psalm 31:1-5

Job 14:1-14

RESURRECTION SUNDAY, APRIL 12

HE IS RISEN!  Today is a day of worship and celebration!  This is the day when all who believe in Jesus Christ are delivered from the gloom of sin and restored to eternal life.  Christ has broken the bonds of death and hell, and his risen in victory!

Scripture reading:

Matthew 28:1-10
