The Cost of Following Jesus
Scripture: Luke 9:57–62
Reflection
As Jesus travels toward Jerusalem, three individuals express interest in following Him. Each conversation reveals something about the true cost of discipleship.
The First Man – Comfort
“I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus responds that following Him may involve uncertainty and discomfort. The Son of Man Himself has no permanent home. Following Jesus is not about convenience—it is about commitment.
The Second Man – Priority
Jesus calls a man to follow Him, but the man asks to first bury his father.
Jesus’ response sounds shocking, but the point is clear: the kingdom of God must take first priority over everything else. Even good responsibilities cannot replace obedience to Christ.
The Third Man – Divided Loyalty
Another man wants to follow Jesus but asks to first say goodbye. Jesus uses the image of plowing a field. A farmer cannot plow straight rows while looking behind him. Discipleship requires undivided focus and forward movement.
What This Means To Us
Jesus is not discouraging followers. He is clarifying what real discipleship requires.
Following Jesus means:
• Surrendering comfort
• Reordering priorities
• Leaving behind divided loyalties
The question is not simply “Do I believe in Jesus?” The deeper question is: “Is Jesus truly first in my life?”
Reflection Questions
Consider these questions today:
1. What comforts might I be holding onto that keep me from fully following Christ?
2. Are there priorities in my life that compete with my devotion to Jesus?
3. Where might I be “looking back” instead of moving forward in faith?
Following Jesus is not casual. It is wholehearted devotion. It is also the path to true life.
Prayer
Lord,
Help me follow You with my whole heart. Remove the distractions and comforts that compete for my loyalty. Give me courage to put Your kingdom first. Teach me to move forward in faith without looking back.
Amen.
